How does coaching differ from therapy?

In comparison to psychotherapy, coaching is a more transactional partnership between a coach and a client. Professional coaching services will support you in achieving a specific goal, advance a specific project or; help you make a difficult, complex or complicated decision. 

 

According to CAMFT's The Therapist  (July/August 2015), "...coaches may not lawfully diagnose or treat their client's mental illnesses...Furthermore, coaches may not delve into the past, provide a cure to a mental illness or relieve mental or emotional suffering. Coaches may not seek to resolve the deeper underlying issues that cause serious mental and/or emotional problems." Coaching is currently unregulated, there are also distinctions between a coach and a therapist vis-a-vis confidentiality and privilege (the right to keep your information private in legal proceedings).

 

Professional standards recommend that a therapist should refrain from offering coaching services to a client with whom they are engaged in a therapeutic relationship. Simply put, if you opt for coaching, we would not engage in psychotherapy. If it became clearing the course of coaching sessions that psychotherapy would facilitate your achieving your goals, Jacqui would refer you out to another psychotherapist for that purpose (CAMFT, The Therapist, July/August 2015).

Cancellation

Once an appointment session is scheduled, you will be expected to pay for it unless you provide 24 hours [1day] advance notice of cancellation[unless we both agree that you were unable to attend due to circumstances beyond your control]. It is important to note that insurance companies do not provide reimbursement for cancelled sessions. [If it is possible, I will try to find another time to reschedule the appointment.].
