June 4, 2009. - Inspired Alliances welcomed Ian Macrae, a representative from Habitat for Humanity at their June Making Connections event held at Spice Room Restaurant in the Posh and Ritzy surroundings of Toronto's Yorkville.
Habitat For Humanity's (HFH) Vision is to have a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
In their mission, they aim to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
Ian was able to inspire many people in attendance with his stories of people coming together to help build homes for families in the Greater Toronto Area. He spoke about the children who were the benefactors of the HFH years later (now adults). Ian cites a young man who prior to having HFH help his parents, he never had the confidence and belief in himself that he could ever have a family and home of his own. He gives credit to Habitat for Humanity for instilling confidence in him and many others to be able to go out and find jobs, get married, have kids, and buy homes on their own.
We learned from Ian Macrae that all families that apply to have a home built for them, are required to contribute a set number of hours which Ian called "sweat equity". In addition, the families would also have a mortgage, and are expected to pay off the home.
Habitat for Humanity Toronto welcomes everyone 16 years of age and older to come out and swing a hammer on site. Their dedicated Habitat Leaders will make sure your experience is as comfortable or as challenging as you would like it to be. Building with Habitat is as fun and educational as it is rewarding.
